CHINA BLACK TEA
Jin Jun Mei is a newly famous black tea from Tongmu Village, Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, where the natural terroir is protected as part of the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve. The volume of tea that can be grown there is limited both by the rough terrain and the area’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jin Jun Mei uses carefully selected leaf buds to craft a naturally sweet and delicate black tea which, unlike most other black teas from this area, is not scented with pine smoke. First commissioned from a Tongmu tea master in only 2006, this new-style, high-quality tea is typically bought as
a 'gift tea' in China for friends or family, and it has found an eager audience among connoisseurs in China.
This bud tea is only harvested before the Qingming festival in early spring. After this, the weather becomes hotter and wetter, speeding up the growth rate of the tea leaves with a consequent dip in quality.
The dry leaves are slender, with a slight twist and an abundance of golden tips that yield a delicious black tea. The careful withering, hand-rolling, and firing of this leaf brings out a rich, smooth and creamy flavour with a butterscotch finish.
